The Green Alliance's Mission is to foster, promote and maintain programs and initiatives that advance environmental sustainability. This will be achieved through community engagement, education, outreach and collaborative efforts that results in public and private participation toward a more sustainable Nevada.
Nevada ENERGY STAR® Partners-GREEN Alliance, a 501 c 3 charitable nonprofit organization, is dedicated to thriving, sustainable communities. With first steps focused in home energy efficiency, through collaborative education and community awareness initiatives we create a commitment to conservation, resource preservation and healthy, sustainable living in Nevada.
Our nation’s homes use more than 20 percent of energy produced and account for about as much
greenhouse gas emission. The United States consumes more energy than any other country in the world. Changing our homes is the first step in a brighter energy future. Each year, NVESP-GREEN Alliance produces an award-winning annual awareness campaign. The nonprofit group also organizes informative meetings, mixers, seminars and special events to encourage and provide community awareness, education and connectivity.
The GREEN Alliance has linked individual, community and national forces in aligning a passion and purpose for the preservation and integrity of our communities, state and nation. As a result of these collaborative initiatives, a consciousness for energy efficiency, sustainability, and even ‘ thriveability ’ is spreading. NVESP-GREEN Alliance has continued to be recognized locally as well as by the U.S. EPA for enduring leadership. From 2003 to 2009 the organization was awarded the National Sustained Excellence Award. The U.S. EPA honored the organization with their 2011 Leadership in Housing Award for Energy Star.
In 2011/2012, NVESP-GREEN Alliance teamed up with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Retrofit Alliance Team (BARA), in a community outreach initiative to educate and support both the contracting industry, as well as homeowners, about the new methods and benefits of home energy efficiency upgrades. To accomplish this, two dilapidated foreclosure homes from the City of Las Vegas’ Neighborhood Stabilization Program were selected for renovations and remodeling with 30% and 50% energy use reduction goals. The fully renovated homes are open to the public for educational tours to demonstrate upgrade options, as well as provide homeowners with a more simplified, quality assured experience and inform them about the process; from selecting a contractor, customizing a plan, and qualifying for the incentives that make the commitment to upgrade very affordable.
The home remodel projects, during renovations, were also utilized to provide necessary training to help ready the industry for new demands in the market. NVESP-GREEN Alliance organized hands-on training programs led by nationally recognized industry leaders and identified funding affording local contractors the opportunity to learn about the science and application of home energy efficiency upgrades and gain first-hand experience with sophisticated yet practical new techniques.
The energy efficiency remodel demonstration homes were completed in February and are available for tours through January 2012."More than ever, it's easy for consumers to be confused about the myriad of green programs and products, associated claims, and ever-changing technologies. Programs like The GREEN Alliance provide important forums to hear industry experts and diverse perspectives so consumers can make informed decisions."

WHAT IS SUSTAINABILITY AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
Sustainability is the minimum condition that the planet needs to continue to maintain all life and systems in the future. It is generally described as the maintenance of environmental, social and economic factors, also known as the triple bottom line. It can be applied to a range of examples, but in recent times focus has been on the need for sustainability in human lifestyles. This includes all facets of human life, from the extraction of natural resources to the production of goods and services that we consume. Ensuring all our actions become more sustainable is crucial for the future of the planet.
We are learning that environmental resources are limited and are quite sensitive to everything that we do. We are already experiencing the effects of the actions of generations that came before us. To make sure that ours and future generations will not experience worse, we need to be aware of the ideals and requirements of sustainability.
In the past, the entire human population was quite small and civilizations had very few needs. Natural resources seemed infinite then because the capacity of nature to regenerate was much higher than the rate at which human beings used up resources. However, all natural systems that we as humans rely on for sustenance are generated by the Planet. If we continue to degrade and disrupt these systems the plants and animals that function within them will suffer. This will in turn affect us as humans as we rely on them for the air we breathe, the food we eat and water we drink.
As we ALL become more aware, we need to put what we learn into action. That is the only way we can allow nature to catch up with the rate at which our requirements grow. This does not mean having to stifle human development. On the contrary, it means sustaining the supply of resources so that we can, in turn, sustain human development.
Originally formed in 2001 as a 100% volunteer driven effort, Nevada ENERGY STAR Partners began as a coalition of local residential developers and business partners in collaboration with EPA – who came together annually to promote ENERGY STAR building standards and the ENERGY STAR brand.
Nevada ENERGY STAR Partners grew from its 5 initial partners in 2001 to 50+ partners, including Builders & Business Partners. The businesses included third party inspectors, trade companies, utility companies, publications, advertising and public relation agencies, and mortgage companies.
The partnership pooled their funds together annually to create a three month marketing campaign with a plan for encompassing >multi media advertising of outdoor billboards, print, website, construction/trade seminars, agent seminars, public relation stories & proclamations from Las Vegas Valley municipalities and the State of Nevada announcing 'JULY is Nevada ENERGY STAR Month.'
Each year has built on the previous and the accomplishments continue to surpass one year to the next. Nevada ENERGY STAR Partners has been recognized by the U.S. EPA with the 'Sustained Excellence' Award. This award recognizes the EPA's partners who excelled in promoting ENERGY STAR brand, consumer education and awareness and ENERGY STAR construction. NVESP was included amongst the 28 Sustained Excellence award winners selected out of 12,000 EPA ENERGY STAR partners. Nevada ENERGY STAR Partners has received this award for six consecutive years; no other partner holds this achievement.
In 2010, the Las Vegas Valley market achieved 90% consumer awareness of the ENERGY STAR brand, and the penetration rate of new ENERGY STAR level homes being built in Las Vegas is now at 67%. We have grown from 91 ENERGY STAR homes in 2001 to now more than 87,000 homes in the Las Vegas Valley alone. The Las Vegas Valley now holds record ENERGY STAR awareness and penetration rate, considerably higher than the national rate.
